The time of te Great awakening in American history (1730-1750) was one of great changes largely caused by many itinerant preachers reaching communities in every corner of the colonies. They rode on horseback [called “CIRCUIT RIDERS”] with a Bible, saddlebags and a change of clothes. Many rode circuits that were over 500-1000 miles in distances. Most were unmarried, not highly educated, and preached freely to common Americans, both free and slaves. Many preached against slavery, even in southern communities which met with opposition.
They also met with strenous opposition from the established churches brought to the shores of America from England and Europe. During the Great Awakening, two widely divergent camps formed known as “Old Lights” which supported the established churches, and “New Lights” which supported the itinerant preachers on horseback.
The main disputes between them were and remain today in 2022; whether the Holy Spirit of Truth indwells within believers, woho are born again of water and spirit; and, whether the Holy Spirit dwelling within that believer actually communicates with them. Read more …
