Parables by J. Thayer: “The Parables of John” series (below).

  • OVERVIEW: This is a series of parables which are being written as series. When finished, it will be collected into one continuous short book entitled the “The Parables of John.” Each of the Parables is fictional in nature. The style of writing is similar to a historical novel, where real historical events, and real historical characters are blended together within a fictional storyline in order to highlight characteristics of the time period; which not found in available primary source documents, but are consistent and plausible.

  • HISTORIOCITY: The Parables portray beliefs, major events, “source quotes” that are consistent with the American history between 1600-1850. Our main characters are John, Sam, Shari and Melissa, all fictional college students who meet fortuitously in their third year at Dartmouth College and begin a bible study group which leads them to life-altering discoveries, while researching and becoming aware of aspects of American history which they were never taught. Other fictional characters enter the storyline as it unfolds.

  • TIME FRAME: Covering the period beginning with colonial America in the 1600’s, our group researches the Puritans of the 1600’s; the Methodist circuit riders from 1700-1850; their diaries, sermons and other writings of ininerant preachers such as: Francis Asbury, Freeborn Garrettson, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, and many others. As research deepens, these students lives, their studies at Dartmouth, and their futures all change in remarkable ways. Historians of the modern day now assert the Two Great Awakenings in England and America which occurred during the period leading up to the American Revolution … may have been one, if not the main cause of it. And as our characters discover this unknown history and consider its ramifications, the revelations change their lives forever.

  • LIFE CHANGING FOR CHARACTERS: In summary, the storyline is set in the modern day; however the revealtions discovered by this team of students and other fictional characters they meet; readers of the Parables will discover the storyline to be one which timeless … and has been repeated throughout or common history back to the beginning of Creation.

  • SOME SUPPORTING VIDEO CONTENT OF STORYLINE: So, to help our readers in further understanding the context of “The Parables of John” and its relevance to the founding era of America brought foreward to 2022, please visit our curated VIDEOS PAGE, where we have collected, and feature more background on the historical people, their beliefs, real events, the birth a movement that changed the course of America in the 1700’s-1800’s.

RELEVANCE TO BIBLE STUDIES FACILITATED BY BIBLESTUDYNH: For those interested in BibleStudyNH’s format concerning those bible studies to be facilitated in 2024, the Parables serve the purpose of also revealing within the storyline the method, and the depth of how those studies may unfold.

FORMATS: The “Parables of John” were initially written in sequential form, intended to be collected into a book (8.5”x11”) as Chapters revaling the unfolding storyline. Two volumes of the Parables are planned, and Volume 1 is now completed as of May 17, 2022. Readers can enjoy the Parables by downloading the entire Volume 1 HERE, or read each Parable in sequence below at the links provided. Volume 1 contains the first 16 Parables as Chapters in the book and is intended as a stand alone book of a completed portion of our storyline. Volume II will continue our storyline in a continuing saga (estimate: July 15, 2022 for completion).

RECOMMENDED READING WTH THE “Parables of John.” During the research and writing of the Parables, the author became intmately aware of the life, writings and sermons of itinerant preacher and Circuit Rider George Whitefield, and the role he played in the 1750’s in the two Great Awakenings and revivals in America. One of those sermons: “Christ - The Believer’s Husband” (PDF) served as an inspiration for the Parables, and specifically for Parable 8 “In the Beginning - Bride Bridegroom”. Readers are encouraged to read Whitefield’s sermon delivered open air, not within any church, as was all of his preaching; drawing audiences from 8,000-30,000 in farm fields. Please navigate to our Circuit Riders page for more on George Whitefield and others. An excellent resource for a study guide is the “Great Awakening Study Guide” (PDF) by Geoff Waugh.

Nine additional sermons of George Whitefield, concepts of which, are also contained within the storyline of the Parables, are given with PDF links immediately below the list of Parables on this page. These sermons were reformatted by BibleStudyNH from a public domain source.

  • This book is in the Public Domain.  It has been acquired from a public domain source as a PDF, and then downloaded and reformatted into Tables for convenience of the readers, and because of formatting constraints imposed by the form of the download.

  • The following is provided to those interested in bible study, and how word studies are completed.   In the period of the late 1800’s when this book was researched and compiled by E.W. Bullinger, people were not as distracted as they are in 2022.  Those who had the time, invested it reading the Scriptures, and many, many devoted their lives to doing so.  The depth of those studies and their analysis would seem to the modern Christian in this Age to be overwhelming.  The number of these people doing what Bullinger did here, dating from approximately 900 A.D. to the present day would easily number over 500 and perhaps as many as 1,000; yet few were published.  Most of those texts have either been purchased by museums, select libraries, educational institutions, or ecclesiastical organizations, and are not readily available to the public.

  • Unlike those which have been withdrawn from public view, Bullinger’s extensive studies, his The Companion Bible (with 198 Appendices) and in excess of 20 other texts he authored, are readily available online, and most in the public domain at sites like https://www.archive.org as well as others.  The reason for placing this at the BibleStudyNH website is two-fold.  First, this study which analyzes just the book of Hebrews, Chapter 11 with reference to other Old and New Testament texts for context and correlation in terms of prophecy and history, is similar to the mission of BibleStudyNH conducting bible studies.  Second, and much more importantly, Bullinger makes the statement many times that it is not the mission of any bible study to provide interpretation of God’s Word.  It is merely the mission to present the Word of God, discuss it together, raise questions … but to always; and always should be emphasized here, humbly suggest the bible study readers take every question to the Holy Spirit of Truth to guide them.

A Brief Biographical Sketch on E.W. Bullinger

“Ethelbert William Bullinger AKC (15 December 1837 – 6 June 1913) was an Anglican clergyman, biblical scholar, and ultradispensationalist theologian.  Bullinger was editor of a monthly journal Things to Come, subtitled A Journal of Biblical Literature, with Special Reference to Prophetic Truth. The Official Organ of Prophetic Conferences for over 20 years (1894–1915), and he contributed many articles.  In the great Anglican debate of the Victorian era, he belonged to the Low Church, rather than the High Church.  He wrote four major works:  A Critical Lexicon and Concordance to the English and Greek New Testament (1877) ISBN 0-8254-2096-2 Number in Scripture (1894) ISBN 0-8254-2204-3 Figures of Speech Used in the Bible (1898) ISBN 0-8010-0559-0  Primary editor of The Companion Bible (published in 6 parts, 1909–1922) ISBN 0-8254-2177-2.  It was completed after his death by his associates.  As of 2020, those works and many others remain in print, or at least are reproduced on the Internet.”  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._W._Bullinger

For those with an interest, “E.W. Bullinger, A Biography” (2000) ISBN 0-825402372-4 by Juanita Carey is an excellent resource for learning more about his early years and his prodigious research, compilations and publications throughout his life. That book can be acquired from a number of book purveyors on the internet.
